For more than a hundred years, UMass Lowell has been setting up students to work in the real-world, resolve genuine problems and help true people. The university started as the Lowell Regular School, a teaching university founded in 1894, and the Lowell Textile University, founded in 1895 to coach technicians and managers intended for the textile industry. In the next 75 years, the two institutions extended their programs to meet the developing needs of the place. Lowell State and Lowell Tech, because they had been then known, merged in 1975 to form the University of Lowell. The campus became part of the University of Ma system 20 years in the past.
